10. Dusty Rhodes (1986) vs. The Rock (1999)
Few babyfaces in the history of wrestling could rally the fans to their side like "The American Dream". Dusty was the textbook everyman; overweight, unattractive and plagued with a lisp, he set the Florida territory on fire and was one of the biggest stars of Jim Crockett Promotions. He's a 3-time NWA World Heavyweight champion and his wars with Terry Funk, Kevin Sullivan, Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen are quite literally the stuff of legend. In 1999 The Rock was WWE's "Corporate Champion" and tearing it up as a heel. He was embroiled in hot feuds with Mankind and Steve Austin and was one of the most entertaining characters we'd ever seen. Rock's persona during this time period is the perfect antitheses of Dusty: while Rhodes was the blue collar son of a plumber, Rock was the blue chip hand-picked favourite of the boss. The story would have practically written itself. In much the same vein as Austin gave fans the opportunity to live vicariously through his actions against his evil boss, Dusty would be an ideal avatar for the regular joes. Being two of the best promo men of all-time, the lead up to the match would be intense. Dusty would lament Rock for never experiencing "hard times", while Rock would wisecrack on Dusty's physique and speech impediment. The match itself would likely deliver, as both men were above-average workers during their respective time periods, but the in-ring action for this one is secondary, as this dream match is all about the characters.
