Alright, so in fairness, the windows of opportunity for this to happen were extraordinarily small; HBK was nearing the end of his first run when The Rock's ascent began to gather some steam, while Michaels had barely returned as a full-time wrestler when The Rock called time on his full-time career in 2003. Still, given that these are two of the most iconic presences of the Attitude Era, it's mindblowing to think that Rock and Michaels never even went one-on-one once, let alone at the Show Of Shows. Whether through a heel HBK taking on a young, upcoming face Rock or a freshly returned face Michaels taking on the Hollywood Heel of 2003, the possibilities for these two cutting promos on each other and then locking up at Mania is as tantalising as it gets for any self-respecting fantasy booker. Sadly, it just wasn't to be.
