10 Dumbest Match Finishes In Modern Wrestling History

5. Sting Vs. Abyss - TNA Destination X 2007

There are several dishonourable mentions here - so many, in fact, that a list could be dedicated entirely to Vince Russo's idiocy. For the sake of both variety and sanity, his contributions to the modern scene will be limited to just the one here.

It's tempting to include the Ultimate X match from Bound For Glory 2005 because the titular prop, retrieving which wins the match, kept falling to the canvas, and because nobody was allowed to pick it up - because that wasn't the finish - they didn't. That was more a failure of execution than concept, inadvertently funny though it was.

The Last Rites match between Sting and Abyss was a complete shambles. The plunder looked like sh*t and crumbled into powder, the action was boring and impossible to take seriously because the scene looked like such low-budget horror. To win, either wrestler had to stuff their opponent into a casket after requesting it be lowered from the ceiling. They might as well have just asked at the start of the match; Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada could have worked Osaka-jo hall before the f*cking thing was usable. This was the literal antithesis to Total Non-Stop Action.

And then, to win, the opponent was raised towards what was, symbolically, the heavens.

Shouldn't have Abyss been sent to hell?

Then again, Russo had plumbed the depths so much by that point that he'd have fallen through every circle.
