For evidence of how far Dolph Ziggler has fallen down the WWE pecking order, look no further than his IC Title feud with The Miz back in autumn 2016 - one which put the former World Heavyweight Champion right back to square one.

The result at No Mercy seemed at the time to be the correct one. Ziggler had proved to the world that he still had some fire in his belly, capturing the Intercontinental Championship after putting his entire career on the line. It was a cathartic moment that should have drawn a line under his being treated like a joke.

The following month, however, Miz won his belt back, in turn undoing all of the time and effort - including re-hiring two of the original Spirit Squad line-up - they had put into making us all care about Ziggler's redemption story.

If the ultimate aim here was to have The A-Lister going into Survivor Series as champion then why not just have Dolph lose? The retirement stipulation didn't have to be enforced anyway, and a short break could have done his character as much good as long and meaningful run with the title.
