10 Electric Wrestling Matches That Saved Pay-Per-Views
3. Steve Austin vs. Dude Love (WWF Over The Edge 1998)
Earlier in 1998, Steve Austin was riding high as the top titleholder in the entire company, putting in fantastic performance after fantastic performance, and selling t-shirts as though the item of clothing had just been invented. Everyone wanted in on the action, and it was an awesome time to be a fan. At Over The Edge, Austin was set to defend his title against the unlikely chosen benefactor of Vince McMahon's power, Dude Love. The tale was that the Dude was so eager to please McMahon that he was blind to the fact he was merely being used to take the gold from Austin, in a subtle nuance which is often forgotten about the entire angle. Stacking the odds against the 'Rattlesnake', Vince positioned himself as the referee, installing his goons Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco as guest ring announcer and time keeper respectively, and generally trying to outnumber Austin. What followed was a great brawl, a fan-pleasing conclusion that had Steve Austin overcoming the odds, and a match which rescued what had been a fairly pedestrian event.
