The Crippler then proceeded to tie a noose around his own neck, using the power of his weights machine to strangle himself to death. The WWE got news of these developments late in the day of June 25th. It was a Raw date and the original plan had called for a Vince McMahon funeral to take place, following the chairman's storyline death a couple of weeks previous. In a panic, those plans were suddenly scrapped. Believing that the Benoit's had died in a tragic accident, the WWE instead decided to book a Chris Benoit tribute show. The episode opened with a forlorn Vince McMahon in an empty arena. He awkwardly revealed that his own death had been fake, whereas Chris Benoit now really had died. With a glum face and tears pricking his eyelids, Vince paid tribute to Benoit, before introducing a series of the Crippler's greatest matches. In the course of the episode, the grisly truth emerged, Chris Benoit was in fact a murderer.
