10 "Epic" Wrestling Rematches That Sucked

7. John Cena vs. The Rock (WrestleMania 29)

The original match between The Rock and John Cena at WrestleMania 28 was an epic encounter that was a year in the making. There was a buzz about the show that split the audience and made fans choose a side like a 12 year-old at a Twilight flick. In that match, Cena suffered the biggest and most crushing loss of his career, at least to that point. As Rock stood tall, celebrating his victory in front of his hometown fans in Miami, fans understood that they had just witnessed a match that will one day stand alongside Hogan-Andre and Hogan-Warrior as all-time epic clashes in WrestleMania history. More importantly, it was a financial success, drawing the biggest buyrate in years and a record-breaking gate. Never one to miss out on making money or put their poster boy over, a rematch was booked for the following year's Showcase of the Immortals. Fans were already disenfranchised over the decision to erase the "Once in a Lifetime" tagline from the previous year's match, not to mention the idea of Cena getting his win back in a passing of the torch moment. A great match would at least ease the pain. Instead, fans were "treated" to a match that started slow before suddenly jumping into the trading of finishers. Rather than a match that told a story or an epic encounter that built upon the previous year's bout, Cena and Rock traded signature moves, relying far too heavily on nearfalls to create drama rather than just working a wrestling match. Cena won, Rock shook his hand and congratulated, and fans were dismayed over the proceedings.
