10 Essential Jay Briscoe Matches
2. The Briscoes Vs. The Motor City Machine Guns (ROH Good Times, Great Memories)
The term 'instant classic' gets thrown around a lot nowadays - but the Briscoes vs. the Motor City Machine Guns was an instant classic.
Both tandems brought their similar-yet-different strands of wrestling to Chicago in a war of attrition that the live crowd was MOLTEN for. From the first ring of the bell, duelling chants of 'Alex Shelley' and 'let's go, Briscoes' boomed throughout Frontier Fieldhouse in a nearly forty-minute epic that brought forth a diverse mixture of wrestling styles. Technical lockups, high-risk dives, stiff brutality, ingenious double-teams; the match had it all.
The range of false finishes as the bout reached its final five minutes brought the Briscoes and the Guns to tag team immortality. To achieve such a feat during what wasn't a strong era for tag team wrestling is remarkable - and yet the Briscoes and the Guns delivered what is hailed as one of wrestling's greatest tag team matches.
Each near-fall grew in exhaustion. None of them were broken up by the opposing wrestler's respective partner. Instead, each one was respectfully kicked out of. Another big move followed and thus, another kickout did, too. It raised the reputation of each man involved, eventually ending in what can only be described as a ghoulish finish.
