Okay, while Michael Cole can hardly be labelled a "wrestler" and his status as "popular" may be a bit of a stretch, Cole's heel turn in 2010 was an abomination that demands to be highlighted.

Cole began his subtle turn when he notably started to degrade Daniel Bryan weekly on NXT. This eventually resulted in physicality and cemented Cole's heel status when he cowardly slapped Bryan in the face. His appointment as mouthpiece for the Anonymous GM saw him gain considerable heat from the crowd, specifically when he would begin each statement with the line "and I quote".

However, it wasn't until Cole physically involved himself in the WWE Title match between Miz and Jerry Lawler that his persona became completely unbearable. Cole helped The Miz achieve victory, instigating the feud between Cole and his broadcast partner. The rivalry bled into the show's commentary and became a noticeable distraction from the action, while it also culminated in one of the worst WrestleMania matches in history.

Heel Cole undoubtedly drew heat but it wasn't the "good heat" where people tune in to see the heel get their comeuppance. Instead, his antics drew that which encourages viewers to mute, fast forward or switch off. More than anything else, the sight of Cole in a singlet is one that can never be unseen.
