10 Familiar Faces AEW Should Sign
9. Ryback
One of the most WWE looking guys to come around in some time, it became a bit shocking that WWE parted ways with him in 2016. But in May of that year, it was revealed through Ryback’s Tumblr page that he was unhappy with the pay structure, booking, and creative system in the company.
Seems like we have heard this story before, haven’t we?
One quote from that was particularly interesting. He stated, “The world is an amazing place and there is more than just a WWE universe. There is The Universe and I will prove one way or another over time I am the greatest big guy in the universe!” That doesn’t exactly sound like a man ready to give up on wrestling now, does it?
This same kind of frustration and drive to prove his own personal potential parallels a lot of the reasons that rebirthed Jon Moxley to the wrestling world. Could we see something similar to that with Ryback making the jump to help boost the competition?
While his story may be similar, his in ring style certainly is not. AEW have decidedly stayed away from much of the “WWE guy” wrestlers to this point. In fact, the only real “monster types” are probably Awesome Kong or Nyla Rose over in the women’s division.
But the debut of Awesome Kong could be a good example of how well Ryback may work here. For the exact reason that he is the only monster, he instantly has a lot more credibility in that role.
Add in the fact that some of Ryback’s first appearances after WWE were with Northeast Wrestling, an indie promotion which regularly featured (and still does) AEW talent over the years including Cody Rhodes, and this may have already been in the works.
And he might not be the only big man WWE alumni to take this leap either.
