Back to the Royal Rumble now, and another notable Rumble match that just wasn't all that. The general consensus was that everything that Steve Austin touched in the Attitude Era turned into gold, but one of his most famous wins was an absolutely hideous match. Back in 1999, the Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon rivalry was at its peak, and it bubbled over at the 1999 Rumble in a huge manner. Austin and McMahon entered first and second, and - after Golga was eliminated seconds after being the third man in the match - both men would flee to the back by going under the bottom rope. The Rumble continued with a real lack of star power; Droz lasted well over 12 minutes, and The Big Boss Man stayed in the match for almost 19 minutes. Kurrgan and Gillberg are hardly star names (some younger fans may not even know who they are), but their appearance in the Rumble that year showed just how poor the depth of the WWE roster was. McMahon eventually returned from the back, but ended up doing commentary. As we all know, he would eventually eliminate Austin last thanks to a distraction from The Rock - but it was just done all wrong. Why McMahon had to win the Rumble in the first place was anyone's guess, but having the two biggest stars in the match be absent for the most of it was an even worse booking decision. Sure, the fact the crowd probably forgot about them when the match was actually going on made it a nice surprise for everyone when they returned - but if you watch it back, you'll see it just isn't all that.
