10 Fascinating Facts About WWE WrestleMania 36
8. It's The First WrestleMania To Have Fewer Than 6 Participants In Every Match Since 1995
To further protect their superstars' health (short of actually cancelling the event), the annual Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royale and the Women's WrestleMania Battle Royale were both cancelled so as to limit the number of wrestlers in the ring at one time. This, coupled with Dana Brooke pulling out of the SmackDown Women's Championship match and the Tag Team Ladder Match being cut in half after The Miz became ill, resulted in a WrestleMania where no match had more than five superstars competing.
WrestleMania has traditionally had big multi-person matches to expose superstars to a larger audience and give as many of their talents as possible a payday. Things like battle royales, Money in the Bank Ladder Matches and multi-man/woman tag team matches all feature in every 'Mania except this one.
You have to go back to WrestleMania XI in 1995 where there were no more than five superstars competing at one time in the ring. The most people they had in the ring was four, with Owen Hart and Yokozuna (with managers Mr. Fiji & Jim Cornette) defeating Bart and Billy Gunn for the WWF Tag Team Championships.
Now this stat discounts managers at ringside and lumberjack matches. If those were included, then you would have to go further back to WrestleMania VII in 1990 for the last time there was no more than five men in or around the ring.
