10 Fascinating Final Matches From Famous Wrestlers
4. Dr. Death
'Dr. Death' Steve Williams was one of the most legendary tough guys in the history of professional wrestling. Most fans last saw him in a minor role in the WWF before being injured in the late '90s, or joining up with the embarrassing Oklahoma in WCW. But he remained active after that, continually working on the independent scene, or in Japan, nearly to the end of his life.
In 2009, Williams had his final match in the United States at Asylum Championship Wrestling. The night was built around celebrating his retirement as he took on Franco D’Angelo. As soon as Williams came out, you could tell he was not well. His head was bald, and he looked incredibly frail, which he was, as he was battling another round of cancer. He had to have a tracheotomy after the first bout, leaving him unable to talk without the assistance of a voice box.
The match is depressing to watch. Here was the once mighty Dr. Death struggling to move, and perform any basic wrestling maneuver. There’s no way he should have been in that ring. Well, at least he did get the feel-good moment in the end by winning the title and the crowd joining him in celebration.
Four months later, the mighty Williams passed away. Cancer sucks.
