After getting his face sewn back together at a nearby hospital, Austin was rushed back to the venue just in time to face Jake Roberts in the King of the Ring final. As he reached curtain, Austin conferred with Michael Hayes, who would be the one conducting the coronation interview.

Hayes told him that earlier in the night, Roberts had invoked his religious faith in his own promo. Austin was then inspired to subvert Roberts' faith for his own character's gain.

A noted football fan, Austin was familiar with those spectators that brought "JOHN 3:16" placards to sporting events, and voila - Stone Cold had the hook for his victory speech. The phrase, "Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!" was just the barrier-breaker that midcard Austin was looking for.
