With the exception of Men on a Mission holding the WWE World Tag Team titles for two days in March 1994 (neither the win or loss was televised), Ahmed Johnson was the first black man to hold a WWE Championship since 1983-84, when Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas held the Tag Team straps for five months.

Johnson's race factors into this entry, based on a story he tells in which he returned to his car after leaving Milwaukee's MECCA Arena that night. According to Johnson, somebody had keyed a racial slur into the paint of his car, sending him into an incendiary fit of rage. Johnson is alleged to have confronted McMahon about the display, but it's never been made clear if the culprit was found.
