Some time before King of the Ring, Foley and friend/mentor Terry Funk paid a visit to WWE offices, where they sat in an office watching Undertaker's prior Cell match with Shawn Michaels. The two were enthralled by the show-stealing performances of both, particularly blood-soaked, battered-and-beaten Michaels. Funk said aloud what Foley felt in his gut, that it was going to be a hard match to top.

Foley asked for advice from the elder statesman on what he could do to make his Cell match special. Funk replied, "I think you ought to start the match on top of the cage."

Later on, somewhat jokingly, Funk added, "Maybe you should let him throw you off the top of the cage." Foley laughed at that silly suggestion before churning it through his mind and gut. After mulling it seriously, Foley said to his friend, "I think I can do it."
