Up until the spring of 1999, Matt and Jeff Hardy were nominally well-known tackling dummies in the WWE realm. They'd picked up a few televised wins in the preceding months, but had not yet broken through as bonafide stars among their peers on the full-time roster

After ditching the plaid pants and X-Gamer headbands, Matt and Jeff made themselves over as moody mutes with stringy hair and baggy black jeans popular among the latently-gothic that filled high schools in those days.

The 1999 King of the Ring provided the siblings with their first pay-per-view match, appropriately against their ideal nemeses Edge and Christian. Two nights after the pay-per-view, The Hardyz defeated The Acolytes to become WWE World Tag Team Champions in Fayetteville, NC, just 32 miles from their hometown of Cameron.
