One of the more notable screwy finishes in wrestling history took place in the 1999 King of the Ring's main event. Steve Austin was doing battle with Vince and Shane McMahon in a ladder match, where the suspended prize was a briefcase containing all of the ownership shares of the company. The man who snatched it would be thereby own WWE.

Austin had victory literally in his grasp when an unseen individual pulled up the briefcase, yanking it out of Austin's reach. The McMahons would later be victorious, so the culprit was likely a Corporation member.

It was never made fully clear, but Big Boss Man was supposed to have been revealed as the helper. It'd been stated that if any Corporate Ministry member interfered, Austin would automatically win the match. Boss Man was kicked out of the Corporate Ministry in an unrelated angle, and a face turn appeared to be imminent. On Raw the night after the PPV, Boss Man merrily rejoined the group after teasing a confrontation with them.

Technically, Boss Man was out of the group when the match took place, so his unseen interference was legal. However, this was never fully explained to the audience.
