It was an open secret for some time that Flair was going to be winning the 1992 Rumble match, and become WWE Champion. Figuring out how Flair was going to win the match was another story.

According to Bobby Heenan in his first book, he pitched the idea of having Flair survive the length of the match in order to capture the gold. Flair had the ideal amount of superhuman endurance, and could capably go the necessary hour in order to make it work.

Heenan does note, however, that McMahon modified his idea somewhat. Heenan suggested that Flair could enter from the number one spot and go distance. Flair, of course, ended up entering as number three, as Heenan says that McMahon changed it just enough to make it his own idea.
