Jannetty was written out of his announced participation in the Rumble after the memorable "Barber Shop" attack at the hands of partner Shawn Michaels. Jannetty was due to miss plenty of time to sell the injuries, but ended up being indefinitely suspended the week after the Rumble, after an altercation with Tampa police in which he was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.

As for the Rumble match, Volkoff was pressed into action, only lasting one minute before being tossed out by Repo Man. It was an interesting choice for a fill-in, as Volkoff hadn't been seen in a WWE ring since Survivor Series 1990, sitting out from all company matters throughout 1991. The crowd in Albany actually booed Volkoff, perhaps forgetting that he disavowed his Soviet alignment in 1990.
