Across his two considerable runs as a top WWE star, Shawn Michaels came to be relied on for his ability to shine in key situations. "The Showstopper" was of course an important part of Royal Rumble lore, having won two of the bouts in the mid-nineties.

The 2007 match was Michaels' fourth time making it to the final four of the annual Rumble contest. His previous three visits to the finishing quartet were in 1994, 1995, and 1996, so an eleven year drought came to an end in his native San Antonio. Michaels would notch one more before he retired, finishing fourth place in 2010.

The previous pair to achieve the feat were Steve Austin (five times between 1997 and 2002) and Kane (four times between 1997 and 2003).
