WWE made the mistake of selling the Shawn Michaels/Mr. Perfect Intercontinental Championship match as one of the greatest matches ever - before it even happened. Certainly on paper, the match sounds like it'd be a ****1/2 classic, but in reality, it was a slow and clunky battle that ended in a countout win for Michaels. It wasn't terrible, but the hype promised much more.

The match made history as the first SummerSlam in which the Intercontinental belt did not change hands. From 1988 through 1992, the belt memorably changed, each time with a babyface reigning victorious. In 1993, there would be no third reign for Mr. Perfect, ending that streak.

From 1988 through 2003, there were only four instances where the Intercontinental belt did not change hands at SummerSlam. In 1996 and 2003, the gold wasn't defended (Ahmed Johnson was hurt in 1996, while Christian was a healthy scratch seven years later). In the other two instances, 1993 and 1995, it was Shawn Michaels retaining the belt. Something-something-doesn't lay down for anybody....
