To hear Bret Hart tell the tale, after Hulk Hogan scooped up the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 9, The Hulkster told the previously-deposed champion that he would be happy to return the favor. At the May 24 Superstars tapings in Halifax, Hart and Hogan reportedly took part in a photo shoot where the two babyfaces engaged in a tug-of-war with the Heavyweight belt. Days later, Hart claims McMahon told him that he was getting the belt back.

Plans changed when Hogan reportedly refused to put Hart over at SummerSlam, and McMahon decided to have Hogan drop the belt to Yokozuna at King of the Ring instead. Hogan would later allegedly tell Hart that Vince tried to change the match to a non-title affair. When the two confronted Vince, the boss is alleged to have told Hart, "I never, ever said it would be a title match."

Hart chalked up the entire mess to some perverse battle of wills between Hogan and McMahon, and grudgingly accepted that he would be working with Jerry Lawler instead.
