Whenever the WWE tag team scene hit a serious nadir, especially in the monthly pay-per-view era, it wasn't all that uncommon to see the belts go un-defended at one of the bigger shows. It was, however, notable that champions Owen Hart and Yokozuna made only one appearance at the 1995 SummerSlam: to hype up the "triple header" match with Shawn Michaels and Diesel for the following month.

Original plans were for Owen and Yoko to face the men they'd defeated at the prior In Your House: Lex Luger and The British Bulldog, the Allied Powers. Bulldog turned heel in mid-August in order to align with Owen and Yoko, so logic would dictate that his turn was intended to occur at SummerSlam.

So what happened? WWE's undercard guys were miffed about the decline in their payoffs (due to attendance dwindling), and McMahon decided to boost morale by putting lesser-used guys in a spot to make some serious pay-per-view bucks. The Smokin' Gunns and The Blu Brothers got the match instead, on account of their solid efforts at recent house shows. Sadly, it didn't translate into a good pay-per-view bout.
