Johnson's WWE career was hindered greatly by a number of injuries, all of which seemed to have the worst timing. Whether he was Intercontinental Champion, or in the cards to work with WWE Champion The Undertaker, Johnson would find himself on the mend for one reason or another.

Johnson underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in June, costing him a championship match with 'Taker at Canadian Stampede. Six weeks later, Johnson was still recovering, but was on pace to return full-time come September

At SummerSlam, Los Boricuas were facing DOA in an eight-man tag that saw Johnson and his Nation of Domination teammates interfere. During the melee, Johnson apparently re-injured his knee trying to give Chainz the Pearl River Plunge outside the ring. The new injury necessitated more time off, and the Nation kicked Johnson out of the group the following night, replacing him one week later with, wait for it....The Rock.
