SummerSlam 2000 emanated from Raleigh, NC, less than an hour's drive (or a few Vanguard 1 flights away) from the city of Cameron, home of Matt and Jeff Hardy. Prevailing logic was that the brothers-in-baggy jeans would be victorious in front of their relative home audience.

Edge has indicated as such, that original plans were to put Matt and Jeff over that night. However, somewhere along the way, the brass decided to keep the gold on Edge and Christian. The line of thinking was that good heat had been built up by the reigning champs (who had hit their stride with their surfer-dude enthusiasm and unique wordsmithery), and that WWE could build more heat on them by putting them over the local heroes in Raleigh.

The Hardyz would win the belts a month later in Philadelphia, and Edge believes they should have just done it at SummerSlam. He notes that Vince thought that would be too predictable, but Edge contends that predictable can be a good thing.
