Dynamite and Rougeau have shared their versions of the story, while Bret Hart and Bad News Brown have given witness accounts and additional context. At one point early in the 20-man tag, Dynamite and Jacques exchanged a series of basic moves without incident. Little did anyone outside of WWE's locker room know what had transpired in early-October between them.

Based on Bret's account, Dynamite assaulted Jacques in the WWE locker room after Jacques was led to believe that Dynamite was responsible for a series of pranks pulled on him. Thinking Jacques was going to unjustly stooge him out to the office, Dynamite went after Jacques and choked him out among a room full of wrestlers.

Not long after, Jacques exacted his revenge. At a set of TV tapings, the future Mountie lay in wait outside the lunchroom for Dynamite to exit. Per most reliable versions of the story, when Dynamite entered the hallway, Jacques slugged him in the mouth with his fist, which concealed a roll of quarters. Dynamite lost four teeth in the attack, and was only saved by Bad News stepping in to pull Jacques off of him.
