Throughout 1988, it became clearer and clearer that the writing was on the wall for the beloved Junkyard Dog. A major star throughout 1985-86, the Dog slid down the card through 1988, becoming more and more of an afterthought.

JYD was originally announced as a member of Jake Roberts' quintet, along with other notable partners in Jim Duggan, Tito Santana, and Ken Patera. However, like Muraco in an earlier entry, Junkyard Dog left the company in October 1988.

Initially, JYD was replaced by B. Brian Blair. However, Blair left the company in early-November, reportedly after disagreeing with plans for a proposed heel turn. Blair was in turn replaced by forty-something enhancement talent Scott Casey, which demonstrated just how thin the roster was beginning to get by the late-eighties.
