Before becoming the patron saint of falling off of looming structures, Shane McMahon was a 19-year-old go-getter eager to break into his old man's enterprise. Logic dictated that one day Shane-O-Mac would be running the show as a fourth-generation promoter, and thus he needed to learn the business inside and out.

In 1989, the younger McMahon was put to use by his father as a referee, working for the first time at Survivor Series. His employment at the show was as an outside official, to corral the eliminated wrestlers and order them to leave ringside in an orderly and timely fashion.

At the time, McMahon worked under the name "Shane Stevens", to avoid the clear connection with the company's boss and lead announcer. Probably for the same reason that referee Joey Marella was never referred to as Joey Monsoon.
