Less than four weeks before Survivor Series, "The Hitman" was wrestling Dino Bravo at a live event in Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. Contrary to the booking that would see Bret go over, Hart lost by countout after sustaining a very real injury.

After being knocked off the apron by Bravo, Hart crashed chest-first onto the metal barricade at ringside, and suddenly found it nearly impossible to catch his breath. In the bump, Hart cracked several ribs, fractured his sternum, and bruised his heart. Initially, Hart was told by physicians that he would be out of action for three months, possibly more.

However, he returned to the road just six nights before Survivor Series, after not even three weeks of recuperation. He wrestled at the pay-per-view through the pain, and admitted that his ribs would bother him for years after.
