Ricky Steamboat had a weird comeback to WWE in 1991. For one thing, he was mostly referred to as "The Dragon" with little mention of his Steamboat name. About 98 percent of the time, his past history (including his Intercontinental title run) was ignored, and he was treated as an entirely-new wrestler.

Steamboat was set to perform on Jim Duggan's team, but instead quit the company at a set of Superstars tapings five weeks out from the pay-per-view. Steamboat gave his notice earlier in the day, and then is alleged to have walked out when asked to lose cleanly to The Undertaker.

Another version of events is that Steamboat was asked to lose to both Undertaker and Irwin R. Schyster at the tapings, and do a stretcher job for each, which Steamboat found to be excessive. In any event, Tito Santana, repackaged as "El Matador", took Steamboat's spot in the Survivor Series match.
