Lesnar would talk extensively about why he chose to leave WWE in 2004, and it went beyond just wanting to give football a go. He spoke about the numerous injuries and afflictions that wracked his body, and his resorting to "vodka and Vicodins" in order to dull those pains.

Lesnar talked about being injured before his Survivor Series 2002 title loss to Big Show, noting that he worked through both broken ribs and a torn PCL in his right knee. The match was short, and Lesnar still managed to plant the 500-pound Show with an F5. He admitted getting Show up was obviously no easy task, even with his considerable musculature.

After Survivor Series, Lesnar would work a somewhat-infrequent schedule with plenty of shorter matches, before working more regularly after the start of 2003.
