Stories emerged throughout November 2005 that Chris Benoit's WWE contract was due to run out around the end of the month. There didn't seem to be much of a chance of Benoit leaving for TNA, even though Christian, The Dudley Boyz, and Rhyno had all become immediate players during their recent debuts in the promotion.

Figure 4 Weekly reports that Benoit was believed to have either signed a new deal around Survivor Series, or was closing in on doing so. Later reports would state that Benoit signed a new deal in April 2006, shortly before taking a five-month sabbatical from the ring. This opens the door to the idea that Benoit either worked without a formal deal for several months (during which he won the US Title), or had just signed a short-term extension while negotiations continued.
