The night after Hell in a Cell 2015, Roman Reigns won what was functionally a mini-tournament to become number one contender for Seth Rollins' WWE Championship at Survivor Series. The match would've brought both the Shield split, as well as the Money in the Bank cash-in ending of WrestleMania 31, to a head.

Less than ten days after Reigns was booked to earn the title shot, Rollins suffered a horrific knee injury in Dublin, Ireland, during a match with Kane, while attempting a sunset-flip powerbomb. Rollins tore his ACL and MCL, and wouldn't return to action for more than six months. The injuries, of course, necessitated vacating his WWE Championship, as well as instituting the hasty elimination tournament to crown a new champion.
