The main event for WrestleMania 2000 seemingly changed on a weekly basis. What seemed like a slam-dunk opportunity to have The Rock triumph over Triple H for the WWE Championship morphed into a triple threat with Big Show involved. Then a scant two weeks before the PPV, recently-retired Mick Foley was added to the match.

Chris Jericho has shared the story that has originally planned for the match, citing the presence of his face in the promo materials. He does add that because he wasn't exactly electrifying Vince at the time, he was replaced with Foley. Foley goes on to note, however, that Vince didn't want him to end his career without main eventing WrestleMania, hence the hasty insertion of the "Hardcore Legend".
