Guerrero was a world-class performer with a unique skill-set and fine-tuned performance instincts, and his November 2005 passing left a massive void in the WWE roster. Based on plans made just days before his demise, Guerrero's death also left a void in the card for WrestleMania 22, at least in the preliminary stages.

The creative team had spoken with McMahon a day or two before Guerrero died, and former writer Court Bauer recalls Bruce Prichard offering a curious match proposal: Guerrero vs. Michaels, two men whose lives and careers parallel more than one might realize.

McMahon was apparently enticed by the idea, knowing both had the charisma and salesmanship to build a wholly original story. Not to mention that it had potential of being a Michaels/Angle-esque showstealer between two first-time opponents. Sadly, as fate had it, the match wasn't meant to be.
