WWE has a patchy record when leaning into the hometown of a superstar by giving them a crowd-pleasing victory. So for them to allow a complete unknown (a fan in the eyes of the public) to gain a victory in the place of his heritage, would be an unrealistic dream, right?

You'd think, but all bets were off when Vince McMahon decided to jibe the capacity crowd in Milan, picking a mere mortal from the crowd to face his vicious monster - the Intercontinental Champion - Umaga.

McMahon's hubris got the better of him when he decided the title match would be fought under a No Holds Barred stipulation. Umaga and The Boss' enemy at the time, Bobby Lashley, would soon intervene, setting Marella up for an easy pin and maiden title victory on his debut.

The Italian fans understandably lost their minds, unaware that Marella had actually been on the OVW books for some time, training for his moment to shine. He seized his chance and fixed himself into WWE history forever.

This miracle in Milan would set Marella on a path involving countless amusing moments, drag and a sock puppet to rival Mr. Socko.

Not bad for a 'random' Canadian (of Italian heritage) in the audience.
