WWE released Scott Goldman, alias Colt Cabana, on February 20th 2009 because 'creative had nothing' for him. That's odd, because anyone whose seen the entrepreneurial journeyman wrestle on the indie scene knows that he's one of the most creative wrestlers in the business. Cabana had regularly worked as an enhancement talent (he wrestled on the final episode of Velocity against the aforementioned Gunner Scott) before WWE signed him to a deal on April 3rd 2007. He'd certainly been on WWE's radar but, due to his comedic ring and promo style, it was always unlikely that WWE was going to give him a proper look. There's a saying in the business that 'funny don't make money' and that comedy wrestlers are strictly opening match material. Scotty Goldman only made a handful of brief appearances on Smackdown, as well as hosting the WWE.com show Good as Goldman before WWE severed ties. Due to the fact that his Art of Wrestling podcast played host to CM Punk's infamous November 2014 shoot (not to mention the related lawsuit that WWE doctor Chris Amann has filed against Punk and Cabana), it's doubtful that WWE are clamouring to offer Cabana another deal. If he were to first show up in WWE this year, however, odds are that he would get a much better deal that Scotty Goldman.
