10 Fun Facts About My Trip To The 25th Anniversary Of WWE WrestleMania
5. The Pre-Show Curse Begins
Up until 2009, the pre-show of WrestleMania was filled with a meaningless battle royal, or lowcard match ups. There was nothing important on there. Except, of course, when they put Ric Flair in a dark tag match before WrestleMania 23. That was baffling. One of the matches I was keen to watch in the Reliant Stadium was the Unification match of the WWE & World Tag Team titles between The Colons and John Morrison and The Miz. Those four guys were a fun part of WWE programming and it felt like a 10-15 minute WrestleMania match would give them all a bit of the spotlight and put a renewed focus on the Unified Tag Straps. The day before the show, I used the hotel computer (before the days of hotel Wi-Fi) to look up wrestling news and after seeing that Taz had shockingly chose not to renew his deal so wouldn't be commentating at WrestleMania, we saw that The Colons/Morrison & Miz match was going to get bumped to the pre-show. In 2016, we know that wrestlers like Daniel Bryan, Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Cesaro and tons of others have suffered the same fate. The Colons would win the tag titles and there was a big pop in the stadium, but we couldn't help but feel that those four guys really deserved to be on pay per-view. Little did we know, it'd be the beginning of an unfortunate trend.
