2. Cesaro DOES Have A Personality

WWE's vice-like control over its performers is notoriously stultifying. The scripted promos and (thankfully retconned) name changes can easily lead one to believe that the performers had no distinct personality in the first instance.

This is especially true of Cesaro, whose reputation on the Independent scene was constructed on the foundations of his preternatural in-ring talent alone. Lumbered with foreign menace, yodelling and stripper gimmicks, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Cesaro was confined to them because he doesn't have a personality of his own.

This isn't true; a veteran of awesome comedy promotion CHIKARA, Cesaro as Claudio Castagnoli (the one success of WWE's mandatory name change policy) learned some improvisational chops in the bingo halls, too. In this clip, he trips on the ring-steps and without hesitation appears more annoyed than embarrassed - as if they were sentient and caused him to trip out of malice. Stamping on them in act of vengeance, he then drills them with his famous uppercut.

WWE is crying out for this kind of spontaneity - but instead, they're content to have him stumble over some schoolyard insults directed at The Miz, which are as corny as the straight to DVD trainwrecks WWE Studios habitually cast him in.
