10 Genius Ways Wrestlers Outsmarted Their Opponents
1. JBL – No Way Out 2005
John Bradshaw Layfield was booked as a cowardly champion in his time on SmackDown in the mid ‘00s. He always found a way to somehow win through any means necessary to hold onto his cherished WWE Championship. Whether it was goading The Undertaker into getting disqualified at SummerSlam or having Orlando Jordan run interference so he could win his title defences against Booker T, Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle.
JBL was booked into a Barbed Wire Steel Cage match with Big Show at No Way Out for the WWE Championship. It was a match designed to make you think there was no way JBL would walk away with the title going against a giant like Show enclosed in a barbaric steel cage.
Show pulverised JBL in the main event match, given JBL’s Cabinet stable couldn’t enter the ring. They still ran interference on the outside of the ring but it wasn’t enough, with them being ejected from ringside. The match ending had Show and JBL climbing the cage and bloodying each other with the barbed wire atop of the cage. Then Show performed a top rope chokeslam on JBL, sending him crashing through the ring canvas. Show got down and broke the cage door and looked to climb out for the win but just before he managed to JBL crawled and escaped under the ring with any shred of energy he had left, winning and retaining his title once again.
