While some credit certainly has to be given to his recent feud-mate MJF, Wardlow has made a rare transition in the business. He has gone from the role of "oversized, silent enforcer" to main event superstar. The booking of Wardlow and MJF has been some of the best since AEW's inception. Now that Wardlow has broken free of MJF, his treatment over the next year could be critical to AEW's narrative moving forward.
Wardlow is to AEW what Bron Breakker could be to WWE- a giant, strong, unstoppable force. As NXT champion, Breakker is the current biggest fish in WWE's smallest pond. On the main roster, however, the NXT title and three dollars can get you little more than a cup of coffee. Wardlow benefitted from the long game. He was brought in to be the muscle for MJF, but early on, breadcrumbs were sporatically dropped to suggest a potential fallout between the two.
By the time the rivalry blew off at AEW's Double or Nothing, the heat had been slowly building to a fever pitch. Wardlow's decimation of his former "boss" not only satisfied those who had been following the story, but created a sense of excitement for what's yet to come.
