Ah, The Invasion angle. It seems as though we, as wrestling fans, will never stop lamenting what could have been. Oh, if only WWE had enlisted the services of Sting, Hulk Hogan and Goldberg. If only WCW would have been portrayed as being on a similar level to Vince McMahon's company. If only, if only, if only...

It tends to be forgotten that there were actually one or two really bloody good matches happening at that time, and few were better than the absolute barnburner between The Rock and Chris Jericho at No Mercy 2001, a rare WWE wrestlers versus WWE wrestler bout. Both men gave maximum effort with the WCW World Title on the line.

After all of the counters and false finishes and big moves - including a mammoth Rock Bottom through the Spanish announce table - it was time for another epic No Mercy match to finish thanks to interference from a McMahon, with Alliance co-leader Stephanie coming down to the ring and sliding a chair into it.

Y2J took full advantage, hitting a Breakdown onto The Great One to win the title. Afterwards, The Rock handed him the chair, a reminder that he might have won on the night but it was by no means clean.

It was excellent performances like this that convinced Vince McMahon to have Jericho go over The Rock and Steve Austin on the same night just two months later, as he became the first ever Undisputed Champion.
