The concept of a wrestling promotion having "Four Pillars" existed long before AEW.

All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) first used the term - which is derived from a collection of Buddhist gods - to describe the group of Toshiaki Kowada, Akira Taue, and the two subjects of this list, Kenta Kobashi and Mitsuharu Misawa.

In various combinations, these icons put on some of the greatest matches in Japanese wrestling history. Misawa and Kobashi fought one-on-one many times, including over the promotion's Triple Crown Championship, racking up stars from Dave Meltzer along the way.

Both men, along with most of AJPW's roster, left the company in 2000 to form a new promotion, Pro Wrestling Noah. Picking up right where they left off, Kobashi and Misawa put on more bangers, often over the GHC Heavyweight Championship. Their wars helped establish the breakout company and the two continued to work together right up until Misawa's tragic in-ring death in 2009.

Kobashi and Misawa are among a handful of wrestlers to have five-star matches in multiple promotions, their natural chemistry and shared affinity and respect for Strong Style wrestling making them the perfect combination.
