10 Great Wrestling Matches Made Up On The Fly
2. CM Punk vs. John Cena (WWE Raw - 25 February 2013)
At some point in the year 2000, Vince McMahon made the call to ban the Piledriver as a transitional near fall spot. The Undertaker's Tombstone was exempt, but the move could only be used by others if they were given special permission. On the 25 February 2013 episode of Raw, CM Punk directly ignored that edict and used it on John Cena.
Vince, again, was incensed.
The Wrestling Observer reported at the time that McMahon considered firing an agent tied to the match but was talked out of it by Cena. As risky as it was for Punk to use a move on WWE's banned list, it did add drama to the match after Cena had already kicked out of his GTS; fans knew the move was a strict no-no, so Punk's Piledriver got a huge reaction.
This was a rare example of someone purposefully defying WWE rules at a time when that rarely happened. Scripting was at an all time high during this era, and it was brave of Punk to throw rules out the window just so he could make his match more special.
Oh well, it worked.
