10 Great Wrestling Pairings That Didn't Last Long Enough

If only WCW realized what they had with these two, it’s possible they could still be in business today.

In 1992, Steve Austin and Brian Pillman were a couple of struggling midcarders. Pillman had flirted with a few small pushes in the company in the past, but he seemed destined to remain an afterthought by management forever. Austin hadn’t done much of note since his arrival in the company, so it appeared they were stuck together just to give them something to do.

While it was clear they gelled from the start, they were split up so Pillman could start teaming with Barry Windham. Once Barry was moved into the title picture, they paired Austin and Pillman together once more with the Hollywood Blondes moniker. They soon captured the Tag Team Titles, and began feuding with Ric Flair and Arn Anderson. It looked like the two had a bright future ahead of them as a team.

Why They Split: Austin claims it came down to politics. Management wasn’t in love with the act and Austin began a singles career, which soon turned disastrous when Hulk Hogan and his friends arrived. The Hollywood Blondes spent a mere 10 months together, which sounds about a couple years too short. Austin vs. Pillman in a heated, main event feud in 1997 in WCW could have potentially kept the WWF from ever finding its Attitude.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
