10 Great Wrestling Pairings That Didn't Last Long Enough
1. The Power Trip
Steve Austin’s heel turn at WrestleMania 17 may have been one of the biggest blunders Vince McMahon ever made. For years, fans absolutely loved the character and thoroughly enjoyed watching him beat the hell out of his boss. Even though he had cooled down a bit in terms of popularity, no one wanted to see him join forces with the man he had tormented for so long.
Austin was joined by his old rival Triple H, and the two got off to a slow start. Their first major feud was against Kane and The Undertaker, which no longer felt fresh, even if the roles were reversed. Fans had seen it far too many times. However, The Power Trip began a feud with Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit, and a potentially great angle was about to be kicked off.
Why They Split: As mentioned in the Jericho/Benoit slide, Hunter’s quad blowing out ended a lot of potential great matches and promos. The Invasion angle soon began, perhaps much sooner than originally planned because Vince needed a new major storyline due to that injury. Austin then turned face briefly before joining the Alliance. It was all a big mess.
Maybe Austin and Hunter wouldn’t have worked out well together in the long run, but rarely has such a major tag team been formed before having to be dropped completely. It would have been fascinating to have seen what the long term plan was.
