10 Great WWE Characters That Have Grown Stale

WWE's 24/7 Championship is a truly unique creation in the world of pro wrestling; it was stale and tired before it even debuted. Eyes rolled when Mick Foley unveiled the title on 20 May 2019 and they have been rolling ever since, doing laps of the cranium with each tiresome title change and preposterous segment.

R-Truth has 'won' this title on 42 occasions. He has defined the belt since inception, sort of becoming a weird WWE equivalent of, say, Shinsuke Nakamura and the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, or D'Lo Brown and the WWF European Championship. Truth has been a comedy character for years, but the 24/7 Championship has become his White Whale, albeit a white whale that he wins and loses on a seemingly weekly basis.

The 24/7 Championship has given Truth a focus over the last year and a half, but it has also stripped him of interest and direction. Will he just chase this title until the end of time? Is there any hope that Truth can do anything else for the rest of his career? The omens aren't good. In the past, Truth's comedy came allied with in-ring athleticism and a consistent presence in actual competition. The introduction of the 24/7 Championship has seen his comedy swallow him.

Yeah, insert your own shark joke there.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
