SmackDown in 2002 was an exciting place to be, and this was thanks in no small part to the stellar work of Kurt Angle and Edge. The latter was continuing to demonstrate his incredible ability to transition from amateur to pro wrestling, while the latter was finding his feet as a singles star.

His feud with Angle was the first real evidence that Edge was a performer for the future. This cage bout capped off an enjoyable series and made it clear that both wrestlers were as entertaining as anyone in the business. They bump and graft for each other in the cage, with Edge demonstrating real wrestling chops and Angle his usual explosive self.

It’s treated as a serious competition in spite of the recently bald Kurt’s hilarious hairpiece (which he no-sells like a champ). The finish sees Hulk Hogan, soon to battle Angle, make a somewhat unwelcome appearance for the purposes of protecting the Olympic champ in defeat, but that doesn’t take anything away from a fast, fluid, aggressive contest with a fabulous finish in the shape of a memorable top rope spear.

Stellar stuff from one third of the always-magic SmackDown Six.
