10 Greatest In-Ring Alliances In WWE Royal Rumble History
5. The Mega Powers - 1989
In the late 1980s, few professional wrestlers were over more than Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. Their popularity further soared anytime the two men united as The Mega Powers. With that in mind, fans popped out of their seats when they saw the pair together in the 1989 Royal Rumble match. Yet, what ensued was something they didn't quite expect.
Late in the battle royal, 'The Hulkster' had done most of the damage, but he also had 'Macho Man' guarding the sidelines. Given their reaction to the following events, most spectators anticipated a showdown between the two vitamin-upped besties.
"Hulking Up" as only Hogan could, the yellow maniac raged and eliminated competitor after competitor until he knocked Savage over the top rope by mistake (said the ever-so-honest 'Real American') when he tried to dump Bad News Brown.
The Slim Jim poster boy was furious and got close enough to kiss Hulk, as they argued about what went down. A moment that was supposed to end in an athletic showing between the popular allies resulted in the famous break up of The Mega Powers. What followed was a legendary feud between the two titans, culminating in a main event match for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 5.
